Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer swatches

I love the Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer and I’ve done a full review of its wonderful qualities here.

Over the past year I’ve collected 5 shades of this full-coverage concealer, and I use it for a million things including:

  • concealing
  • contouring
  • as an eyelid primer
  • to cut my crease (it is AMAZING for this purpose – I would recommend getting a very light shade to use for cutting the crease; I use Fair Neutral)
  • to clean up my brows after applying brow pomade/powder/pencil

So, I thought I would share some swatches of my small collection with you all, in case you want to purchase the Shape Tape concealer and are conflicted about which shade to buy.

The Abyss – a black smokey eye makeup look

This look was inspired by An Kook on YouTube, and Desi Perkins.

It was my first time doing a black smokey eye, and I was really happy with how it turned out, especially as a first-time thing. I think it looked better in real life than it did on camera.

Tarte Rainforest Of The Sea Radiance Drops - Review & LOTS OF Swatches

Tarte Cosmetics Rainforest Of The Sea Radiance Drops – Review & LOTS OF Swatches

Sephora describes this product as:

What it is:
A multitasking elixir with brightening pearls and Rainforest of the Sea™ complex for a healthy-looking glow.

What it does:
These non-greasy, multitasking, four-in-one, mermaid-like radiance drops effortlessly go on skin as a highlighting primer, coat lips in moisture, infuse foundation with instant radiance, and impart a pearlescent, all-over glow. The hypoallergenic formula completely absorbs into all skin types—even oily skin—without clogging pores, while the antioxidant Rainforest of the Sea complex, coconut, jojoba oil, and vitamin E help hydrate and nourish your skin. Wear it alone as a highlighting base or dropped onto tarte’s clay stick foundation for dewy coverage with extra skincare benefits.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
– Parabens
– Phthalates

What else you need to know:
This product is hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested.

I was so excited…

Tarte is arguably my favorite makeup brand. I love their shadows, their palettes, their liners, their lip products. If you check out my makeup drawers, I have a ton of stuff from Tarte.

Which is why I was so excited about these Radiance “Mermaid” Drops when Youtubers and Tarte began posting about them on social media. I couldn’t wait to place my order when the item arrived online and I couldn’t wait to receive it, OMG, you guys, I was so excited!

Sigh. It’s always better to have zero expectations, isn’t it?

The yays

I won’t do The Yays as bullet points, like I normally do. I’ll simply talk about this product. Now, listen. I want to make it very clear that this is not a highlighter. These Radiance Drops are not a highlighter. They are more of a serum/dewy makeup base. Kind of similar in purpose to the Farsali Rose Gold Elixir.

You get 30 ml of product with these, and for $32, I think it is a good deal. I had a coupon at Tarte.com which meant I got this for around $25. Yay.

These drops are like a non-greasy “oil” which absorbs into the skin very quickly, and makes my dry skin look visibly more hydrated, and softer to the touch. My skin feels nice after I apply these, and it isn’t sticky at all.

I have sensitive skin and I didn’t experience any breakouts with this product.

The bottle is quite beautiful also.

The mehs

WHYYYY did Tarte have to stuff so much visible gold shimmer into these?!

I hate when shimmer from a product is visible on my face. Hate it.

And this product is guilty of exactly that. After I massage the drops into my skin, they leave behind loads of small but clearly visible shimmer particles that make you look like Edward Cullen.

Not a good look. (Sorry, Twilight fans.)

Even under foundation and powder, those pesky shimmer particles make their way up to the top to look like that^. And the shimmer is gold, which makes my Simpson-yellow skin tone even more pronounced.

Plus the dropper has very little control, and the product flows out of it more freely than I would like it to.

I’ve tried as best as I can to show the shimmer in these drops in the pictures and videos below. You can open them in a separate tab and zoom in to view the details.

In conclusion…

I wish Tarte had altogether omitted any shimmer (mica) from these Radiance Drops. I think the “oil” (or whatever this formulation is) does a good job of making the skin look hydrated and plump on its own. It is actually a good primer for makeup, though I did not notice that my makeup lasts longer with this product under it.

Or I wish the shimmer was more finely-milled than it is. I don’t like the disco-ball look.

The Tarte Cosmetics Rainforest Of The Sea Radiance Drops are good for anyone who has zero expectations from them. This product is good for anyone who doesn’t mind visible shimmer on their face, and it is good for someone who wants a shimmery dry oil for the body, as it actually looks quite nice on the body compared to the face. I think in my swatches above, it looks quite decent on my arm, though I tried very hard to capture the shimmer in this.

Personally, I am disappointed with it. The hype with this one really was not backed up. I got these drops hoping they would be similar to my beloved Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base. They don’t even come close.

Tarte Clay Stick Foundation – Review & Swatches

I’ll be honest here: Tarte is quickly becoming one of my favorite brands; perhaps my favorite! ❣️

They have, for the past few years, come up with one amazing offering after another, most of which keep my makeup obsession fueled and my wallet depressed.

Image result for money real housewives gif

The clay stick foundation is a very recent product and Tarte has this to say about it:

Have you fed your skin lately? Our 12-hour, creamy matte clay stick feeds your appetite for weightless, natural coverage & good-for-you nutrients. #feedyourflawless

  • Amazonian clay: nature’s most perfect ingredient for better, longer, truer wear
  • mineral pigments: soothe & soften skin
  • vitamin C: antioxidant that fights free radicals while brightening skin
  • vitamin E: natural preservative that also acts as an emollient & antioxidant

Product performance: A buildable, powder-to-liquid formula that melts into skin for medium-to-full coverage, leaving a natural finish that looks & feels just like your own skin. Micro-encapsulated powders then burst with your body heat to keep you shine & cake-free. The vegan formula features antioxidant vitamins C, E & Amazonian clay, a total skin-balancing powerhouse that hydrates or mattifies depending on your skin type. The guilt-free blend also means there are no harsh chemicals like talc, gluten, sulfates, or parabens in your buildable, creamy coverage. Use on-the-go, as a spot concealer, or in lighter or darker shades to highlight & contour – just swipe, blend & #slaywithclay.

You get 9 g of product for $39. (Side note: what is it with the odd numbered pricing?! Make it $38 and call it a day.)

The shades

I have this in the shade Light Medium Neutral. It is a bit light for my currently NC25-ish skin tone, but it is great for highlighting and I think it will suit me well in the winters. I think the shade Medium Sand would have been good for me currently. Still, this shade can be worked with, blended to perfection, and darkened with the right powder shade or an off-setting cream contour.

The yay

  • I live for this finish. It is supposed to be balanced which means it suits your skin, whether it is oily, dry, or combination. Basically it is supposed to offer the best of both worlds (matte and dewy), and IMHO, it does. The finish is radiant and brightening, yet not greasy or oily looking. It is matte radiance and a healthy glow wrapped into one beautiful looking foundation.
  • The coverage is medium to a buildable full. Despite being a seemingly light and sheer foundation, this product covered all my blemishes, discoloration, and uneven skin tone. Color me impressed!
  • Goes on so smoothly and builds up with literally no cake-face.
  • I heard it photographs very well, and this is one of the main reasons I got it. I am happy to tell you that it does indeed photograph amazingly. Your skin looks like skin, but enhanced, and not makeup.
  • It lasts about 7 hours on me before beginning to slide off. So that 12 hour wear claim did not ring true for me. (I think it is best to moisturize lightly under this if you have oily skin.) But I am happy with 7 hours, so.
  • It is a very hydrating foundation. Like I thought my skin looked and felt plumper with this on. I had no dry patches on my normally dry-patchy skin.
  • Looks and feels beautiful. So sturdy and heavy and luxurious.
  • 12 shades to suit all (ok, most) skin tones.
  • This is quite ideal for highlighting and contouring, too.

The meh

  • I don’t really like the price point. $35 would be more suitable, I think.
  • It may look greasy on oily skin.
  • If you don’t let your moisturizer set, or wear heavy moisturizer, this may slide off. It looks a little matte in the swatch below, but that is because I applied it on my dry arm without any moisturizer or primer.

Do I recommend this?

I think it is a great offering if you covet a foundation that gives you healthy skin-like finish and makes you look naturally radiant in pictures. I love the finish and the coverage. But I do not think it is my HG, simply because I like a more matte finish at the end of the day, though I quite like it for the summer.

Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer is described by Tarte Cosmetics as:

A vegan friendly, creamy concealer for radiant coverage and contouring.

This concealer comes in a decidedly large and pretty bottle, and has a big doe foot applicator for applying the product to the face.

You get a cool 10 ml for $24, which is better than the offers you get for a lot of other concealers. The Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer for example is 6 ml for $30 at Sephora.

The shades and how to choose one (in my humble opinion)

This comes in a huge range of shades, 14 to be exact. I chose Fair Neutral and Light Sand for my NC20 (it’s actually C2, in MAC, but NC20 is the closest to that) skin. While Light Sand works well as a highlight and concealer shade, Fair Neutral is a little light for my liking and I think Light Medium would be closer to my skin tone.

All the shades in this range have a very brightening base, so they look “lighter” than they actually are when applied, as they are supposed to be used as highlight shades.

My advice would be to go to your local Ulta and swatch whichever shade matches you best (or one lighter, if you dig that) and get that, as these have a brightening effect like I said, so even if you get an exact match, that is likely to look a tad lighter when you blend it out.

The Yay

  • The coverage on these is out of this world. Mark my words when I say the slightest bit (one dot, for me) is all you need for high, opaque coverage.
  • A little goes a very, very long way. You see those swatches above? They are enough to cover my entire face. No, I’m not joking.
  • These are quite perfect for highlighting the under eye area. They not only cover blemishes/dark circles/redness, they also provide a radiant matte highlight.
  • Because they have a matte finish, they’re good for oily skin.
  • These last a long time without fading/patching/creasing – at least for the 8 hrs that I had them on before washing my face.
  • Vegan.
  • $24 for 10 ml? Yaas.

The Meh

  • The matte finish means this concealer clings to dry patches so if you have dry skin I advise moisturising it well beforehand.
  • The shade range is confusing.

Because this is so dense, I apply it with a buffer brush such as Sigma’s Concealer Blend Kabuki, Morphe M335, or Morphe M173.

Do I recommend this?

You bet. It might just be my new HG concealer. I have dry skin so I have to moisturise well before using it.
