Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express: A Story With A Moral

So the first time I used this mascara,

I hated it. Honestly it felt like the crappiest mascara I ever bought. It was not waterproof and I bought it thinking it was. Plus I felt like it really didn’t make a difference to the volume or length of my lashes so I chucked it away to the back of my makeup drawer and forgot all about it.

Fast forward to a couple of months later,

When I got sick of scrubbing my eyes with micellar water in a bid to remove the stubborn remnants of my ride-or-die waterproof Essence mascara. Honestly it was a pain in the butt trying to remove that one daily so I decided to give my Maybelline Volum’ Express another try.

With zero optimism or hope,

I positioned it at the base of my lashes, wiggled the wand, and swept it up.

My lashes were transformed.
They looked fuller, longer, blacker, wispier; everything a girl wishes her natural lashes look like without the aid of falsies.

Honestly, this mascara is the bomb-diggity.

❤ (Yes, I said bomb-diggity.) It makes my lashes look like I have lash extensions. If you have Kylie Jenner on Snapchat, you’ve probably seen how long and wispy her natural lashes are, due to lash extensions. This is that, x50.

❤ It is black as sin, and does everything in terms of volume, length, and wispiness. I was the kind of person who used an eyelash curler religious and with this mascara, I no longer have the need for that.

❤ It isn’t waterproof, but it also doesn’t budge easily. And it doesn’t smudge either.

❤ The brush is big, but when I apply the mascara tilting my head back, it makes no mess at all.

I guess the reason I found it to be crappy on initial use is because I used one measly coat, didn’t wiggle the wand at the base of my lashes (that gives good height and volume), and splashed my face with water an hour later forgetting I had any mascara on.

My bad.

The moral of the story is, second chances are important. You might be surprised at the outcome.

So do I recommend this mascara?

You bet.

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser in Neutralizer

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Concealer + Treatment, in Maybelline’s own words:

Active Formula and Micro-Corrector Applicator erase dark circles, puffiness and fine lines instantly.

Why You’ll Love It

• Micro-Corrector Applicator micro-fills and smoothes.
• Active formula with Haloxyl reduces the look of puffiness and shadows while fading the appearance of under-eye circles.
• Apply neutralizer shade for extreme dark circles.
• Brightener shade adds a luminous touch.

For Best Results

Use applicator to apply concealer directly to under-eye area, blending in an outward motion.  Wipe off excess eye concealer with dry tissue only.  Do not wet applicator.

This concealer is available in 6 shades, including a pink-toned Brightener, and a yellow-toned Neutralizer, which I happen to have and will review.

The 6 ml product comes housed in a bottle which you need to twist to dispense the product into the sponge/applicator.

The Good

I love the shade Neutralizer which is perfect for giving my under eye area a mate, brightening highlight.

A great thing about this shade is that, being a neutralizing shade, it is likely to suit a lot of skin-tones and can be used as a liquid-cream highlight for darker skin-tones. People with very pink undertones are perhaps better suited for the pink-toned Brightener shade.

While the formula is very thin, the product blends easily and provides surprisingly good coverage for blemishes, light to medium coverage, I would say. The finish is satin-matte.

Without powder dusted on top, the product lasted for around 6 hours on me before the effect faded slightly. My skin, however, still looked bright and somewhat even-toned after 8+ hours of wear.

You get 6 ml of product for $6.99 which I think is a fair deal.

The Bad

If you are looking for a full-coverage under eye concealer, this is not it in my honest opinion. It can be built up, yes, but it provides medium coverage at most.

I hate the applicator. You have to twist it about twenty times before the product comes out. And I don’t like how so much of it sticks to the sponge.

Plus I think its a bit unhygienic.

I dispense the product using the sponge in a triangle under my eyes and wherever I want a matte, bright highlight, and blend it out using my MUA F10 Blush Buki brush. (Check out this post for further detail.)

Do I recommend this product?

To anyone who wants a semi-matte, brightening concealer that blurs imperfections, and doesn’t feel heavy on the face or the wallet, yes. I will be repurchasing this in the future.

Available at most drugstores selling Maybelline products and on for $6.99.
