Sephora Collection V for V.O.L.U.M.E. Mascara

Sephora Collection V for V.O.L.U.M.E. Mascara in shades Marsala, top, and Purple, bottom

Sephora says:

What it is:
A volumizing colored mascara that makes your eye color pop.

What it does:
This colorful mascara compliments every eye color. Its mousse-like formula, coats every lash for intense color and all-day wear. Find the perfect shade to make your eyes pop.

Beauty Tip:
Purple shade flatters brown or green eyes. Blue shade intensifies baby blues. Turquoise looks great with hazel eyes. Marsala shade compliments any eye color.

You can mix and match shades by applying one color to top lash and another to the bottom for a unique look.

You pay $10 for this product. It comes in 4 shades and I have Marsala and Purple.

The Yay

  • GORGEOUS shades which are pigmented and show up next to my dark brown eyes.
  • Doesn’t clump, and separates lashes well.
  • Dries quickly.
  • Smudge-proof.
  • It is volumising yes, but not insanely so. Upwards of two coats achieve best results.
  • No fall out. I have worn this to bed and woken up the next day with minimal fallout.
  • Good for fun looks.
  • Gives some lift.
  • Inexpensive.

The Meh

  • Requires an eyelash curler if you want more lift and a wide-eyed look.
  • (Maybe a pro, butI don’t exactly know if this is water-proof; the site does not say so and when I splashed my face with water it didn’t come off, so I suppose it is. Plus, I had to work to wipe it off of my arm under running water, after the swatch above. (It is semi-waterproof, perhaps? :/ )

Do I recommend this product?

If you want a fun makeup look, yes. The shades are the main selling point about this. Performance-wise, I have used better contenders. I’d probably give this one a B+, were I to grade it. Still, I like it and the shades as well as little fall out make me consider buying it again.

Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express: A Story With A Moral

So the first time I used this mascara,

I hated it. Honestly it felt like the crappiest mascara I ever bought. It was not waterproof and I bought it thinking it was. Plus I felt like it really didn’t make a difference to the volume or length of my lashes so I chucked it away to the back of my makeup drawer and forgot all about it.

Fast forward to a couple of months later,

When I got sick of scrubbing my eyes with micellar water in a bid to remove the stubborn remnants of my ride-or-die waterproof Essence mascara. Honestly it was a pain in the butt trying to remove that one daily so I decided to give my Maybelline Volum’ Express another try.

With zero optimism or hope,

I positioned it at the base of my lashes, wiggled the wand, and swept it up.

My lashes were transformed.
They looked fuller, longer, blacker, wispier; everything a girl wishes her natural lashes look like without the aid of falsies.

Honestly, this mascara is the bomb-diggity.

❤ (Yes, I said bomb-diggity.) It makes my lashes look like I have lash extensions. If you have Kylie Jenner on Snapchat, you’ve probably seen how long and wispy her natural lashes are, due to lash extensions. This is that, x50.

❤ It is black as sin, and does everything in terms of volume, length, and wispiness. I was the kind of person who used an eyelash curler religious and with this mascara, I no longer have the need for that.

❤ It isn’t waterproof, but it also doesn’t budge easily. And it doesn’t smudge either.

❤ The brush is big, but when I apply the mascara tilting my head back, it makes no mess at all.

I guess the reason I found it to be crappy on initial use is because I used one measly coat, didn’t wiggle the wand at the base of my lashes (that gives good height and volume), and splashed my face with water an hour later forgetting I had any mascara on.

My bad.

The moral of the story is, second chances are important. You might be surprised at the outcome.

So do I recommend this mascara?

You bet.
