Where my makeup journey began – Classic Makeup & Beauty by Mary Quant

My Makeup Story

Mary Quant’s bookΒ Classic Makeup & Beauty was published by DK under the series DK Living in 1998.

I got this book 10 years ago, around 2007, nearly 10 years after it was published.

I remember very clearly the day and circumstances by which I came in possession of this book. It was late summer, and the days were stiflingly hot. I, 14 at the time, was moping around the house because it was yet another boring summer vacation wherein we did nothing and went nowhere. My mother was a single parent (my father passed away when I was barely two months old), taking care of three old people and two kids while maintaining a position as a college professor of anatomy. Plus, she’d been battling breast cancer since I was about 10.Β So vacations were probably the last thing on her mind.

DIY Beauty: Silky Avocado Eye Cream via Hello Glow!

Disclaimer: This recipe is not mine. It is taken from the book Hello Glow by Stephanie Gerber. Here is the link to the Hello Glow blog.Β

The Story

Lately I have developed an unhealthy obsession with eye cream, and my favourite one is the Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado which I reviewed HERE..

So when I came across a recipe in the book Hello Glow where an eye cream was created using the main natural ingredients in the Kiehl’s version, I knew I had to try it.

The Eye Cream πŸ‘€

1 tablespoon shea butter

1 tablespoon avocado oil

1 teaspoon vitamin E oil

30 ml lidded glass jar

Small saucepan

Measuring spoons

  1. Boil 2 inches of water in a small saucepan and reduce the heat, to create a water bath. Place the shea butter into the glass jar, and put this glass jar in your water bath.
  2. Wait for the shea butter to melt, stirring occasionally.
  3. Once the shea butter melts, remove the jar from the water bath and let it cool for 2 – 3 minutes.
  4. Add in the vitamin E and avocado oils, and stir to mix. Continue stirring as the mixture cools to create a smooth, creamy texture.
  5. Let the mixture cool (I placed it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours), screw on the lid. To use, dab a little around the eyes; do not tug at the skin.

This cream is to be used daily, it is for all skin types, and should be used within 6 months.

My Experience

This cream is quite luxuriant and emollient, so I try to use it at night only, before bed time. I wake up in the morning with firmer, plumper skin around my eyes. The ingredients in this are amazing for keeping the delicate skin around the eyes fresh and youthful-looking.

Sometimes I like to apply this on a bare face for about half an hour or so and then rinse it off for a quick treatment. I also like to apply it on a bare face in the shower. I like to think the steam mixes with the cream and it is magically absorbed into my skin for increased fabulousness.

I also like to use it around my lips for the same benefits it gives the skin around my eyes.

A little goes a long way with this!

I recommend using a 30 ml glass jar for this as the recipe states. I used three 10 ml ones, and that was a slight pain. (But OMG they looked so cute!) Everything you need for this recipe can be found on Amazon.

I like to keep my jars in the fridge, as shea butter melts quickly with the heat of the body, so it is easy to keep the cream in the fridge without fear of it becoming frozen.

Note: This does smell very much like shea butter and that may not be to some people’s liking.

Lazy Sunday: My Ring, Orange S03, & More

There wasn’t much going on this weekend, so I decided to do some online shopping. There’s a ton of amazing Facebook pages out there which are sellingΒ some seriously cool stuff these days. I purchased this ring from MeeMo’s Accessories, a page offering beautiful,Β unique jewelry.

I was highly impressed by their services. I ordered via WhatsApp on Friday and my ring was delivered to me the very next day. The quality of the product is very good. Overall I’m happy with my purchase; I would definitely recommend this page to anyone looking for quality, affordable jewelry.

They have some lovely, reasonably-priced items up for grabs on their Facebook page.

In other news, I finally finished Season 3 of Orange Is The New Black this week. If you don’t watch this show, what is wrong with you?!?!Β you must give it a try!!!Β This season, like the previous two, was amazing. This is one showΒ that keeps you gripped and feeling for the characters, even the relatively unlikable ones, throughout. Can’t wait for Season 4, especially because of how Season 3 ended!

Also, the book I’m reading these days is Princess: More Tears To Cry by Jean Sasson. This is the fourth book in the Princess series, detailing the life of a Saudi Princess. I loved the previous three and have read and re-read them countless times, though I find the fourth book to be decidedly more depressing than the first three. Despite some tragic story lines, the first three books had relatively more lighter moments than this one. If you’re a fan of this series or you enjoy reading non-fiction, you might want to check this book out. Here’s the Goodreads link.

So that’s about it from my end. I’ll leave you now with a quote from this season of Orange Is The New Black,Β spoken by one of the show’s most memorable characters.

WishingΒ you and yours an enjoyable and relaxing Sunday,

P.S.: I’m not promoting any of the Facebook pages, shows, or books mentioned in his post – I just happen to really like all of them!
